Unit 3 · Grades 1–12 · 11 lessons

Keyboarding: Typing Academy

📘 Teacher Guide

Unit overview

A full touch-typing course in 11 levels, from finding the home row to professional writing. Each level is one lesson here, with 10 short practice lessons on the site that unlock in order. Students learn correct finger placement first and build speed only once accuracy is steady.

Big ideas

  • Fingers rest on the home row (F and J have bumps).
  • Each finger has its own keys.
  • Eyes on the screen, not the keyboard.
  • Accuracy first; speed follows.

Before you teach

  • Create a free class at keloskillracer.com/teacher and print the student code cards.
  • Test one activity on a classroom computer before the lesson (sound on or off, screen size).
  • Show students how to sign in at /join with the class code and their student code.
  • Teach good posture: feet flat, back straight, wrists floating.
  • Optional: cover keyboards with a cloth for 'eyes up' practice in later levels.

Pacing

11 lessons. Plan 2–3 class periods per level for younger students, 1–2 for older students. 10–15 minutes of daily practice works best.

Teaching tips

  • Set a class goal for accuracy, not speed.
  • Use the class progress table to spot students who need help.
  • Print certificates when students pass a checkpoint.

Standards alignment

  • ISTE 1.1 Empowered Learner
  • ISTE 1.6 Creative Communicator (uses keyboarding to communicate)
  • CSTA: Computing Systems (using input devices efficiently)
