Mouse Skills
📘 Teacher Guide
Unit overview
Students build the mouse control they need for every other computer task: pointing and clicking, double-clicking, right-clicking, dragging and dropping, following moving targets, steady control and quick reactions.
Big ideas
- Hold the mouse gently; move with the arm and wrist, click with one finger.
- Different clicks do different jobs.
- Accuracy first, then speed.
Before you teach
- Create a free class at keloskillracer.com/teacher and print the student code cards.
- Test one activity on a classroom computer before the lesson (sound on or off, screen size).
- Show students how to sign in at /join with the class code and their student code.
- Check every computer has a working mouse (trackpads are harder for young children).
Pacing
4 lessons of 30–40 minutes. Short daily 10-minute warm-ups work well for kindergarten.
Teaching tips
- Model the 'mouse grip' under a document camera.
- Celebrate accuracy, not just high scores.
- Let fast finishers try the next level.
Standards alignment
- ISTE 1.1 Empowered Learner (uses technology to demonstrate learning)
- CSTA: Computing Systems (using devices)
